UpthrustWyckoff Upthrust

A false breakout above a trading range that traps longs before the markdown phase. Opposite of Spring.

An Upthrust (UT) is the bearish counterpart to a Spring — a false breakout above a Wyckoff Distribution range that traps longs before the markdown phase. The Upthrust wick is rejected and price closes back inside the range, signaling the top is in.

Upthrusts are notoriously hard to spot because they look like breakouts in real-time. The tell: volume spikes on the Upthrust but lacks follow-through; subsequent candles fail to make new highs. Short on the close inside the range, stop above the UT wick, target = full range projection down.
