Why pros live on VWAP
Every institutional trading desk is benchmarked on VWAP. If a fund manager buys $500M of AAPL above VWAP, they got a worse fill than the market. Their job is to buy below VWAP, sell above. That's why VWAP acts as a magnet during the trading day.
Pair VWAP (where they want to fill) with Volume Profile (where the volume actually was), and you have the cleanest day-trading framework that exists.
VWAP — the institutional benchmark
- VWAP line — volume-weighted average price for the session. Resets daily.
- VWAP +1σ / +2σ bands — standard deviation bands. Above 2σ = stretched.
- Price tends to mean-revert to VWAP intraday. The further it stretches, the higher the pullback probability.
Volume Profile — where the action was
- POC (Point of Control) — price level with highest traded volume. Acts as magnet + S/R.
- Value Area — price range containing 70% of session volume. VAH = top, VAL = bottom.
- Low-volume nodes between value areas are "no-man's land" — price moves fast through them.
The setup — VWAP reclaim into POC
Three high-probability setups stack VWAP + VP confluence:
- Price has been below VWAP for ≥ 10 minutes
- Price closes back above VWAP
- Next candle holds above (reclaim confirmed)
- POC sits above current price (target)
- Volume on reclaim candle is above average
- Price has been above VWAP for ≥ 10 minutes
- Price closes back below VWAP
- Next candle holds below
- POC sits below current price
- Volume on rejection candle is elevated
Entry execution
The 1st candle to close on the new side of VWAP. Highest fill rate, requires the next candle to hold.
Lower fill rate, but you've seen the hold. Use when intraday range is choppy.
Stop loss & take profit
Just beyond the failed-reclaim wick on the other side of VWAP. If price reclaims back, the trade is invalid.
Typically 0.5–1× ATR(14) on your timeframe.
TP1 = POC. TP2 = VAH (long) / VAL (short). TP3 = the +2σ VWAP band.
Scale out at POC, ride the rest.

Common mistakes
Trading VWAP touches
A touch is not a reclaim. You need price to CLOSE through and HOLD.
Using it on FX / 24h markets
VWAP needs a session anchor. FX has no closing bell. Best on stocks/futures.
Ignoring volume on the reclaim
Low-volume reclaims fail constantly. Need volume above average to confirm institutional participation.
Holding past VAH/VAL
The edge ends at the value-area extreme. Beyond that you're hoping, not trading.
First 30 minutes
Opening drive = whipsaw. Wait for the rotational phase.
